‘Well’ asked Tip as soon as Henny had lit the candle inside him. ‘How did it go?’

‘Okay,’ she admitted. ‘Got several stares from people, most people avoided me,’ she added, thinking back to Graham. ‘Oh, and we caught a couple of villagers at it.’

‘At what?’ Tip said blankly.

Henny tilted her head and stared at him. ‘Tip, I know it’s been a couple of hundred years but, come on.’

His eye-holes widened. ‘Oh, sex, you mean? Why didn’t you say? Goodness, it’s only a word, after all.’

‘Fine,’ said Henny, folding her arms and turning away from where he was sitting on the table. ‘I’ll shut up.’

‘Fine,’ Tip sulked.

Henny turned back round, a smile threatening to appear on the corner of her mouth. ‘Are you really in a huff?’

‘Of course not, silly,’ he reprimanded gently. ‘So, go on. Tell me all the gossip.’

So Henny told her friend all about Meryl and Alf having sex in Nathan’s garden and about the cow poo. Tip roared with laughter, almost knocking the candle over as his whole being shook with mirth.

‘Serves her right. From what you’ve told me, she sounds like a bit of a cow herself.’

Henny nodded and grimaced. ‘She is.’

‘Going to carry on with this Operation Cat thing?’ he asked.

Henny pursed her lips for a moment, and exhaled slowly. ‘I don’t know. What’s the point?’

‘Ah, but it means you’ll be spending more time with Handsome next door.’

Henny didn’t respond. Instead she picked an imaginary bit of fluff from her duvet.

‘Oh,’ Tip gasped. ‘You like him, don’t you. And before you start getting all clever, I mean you’re attracted to him.’

‘No,’ she said, avoiding his gaze.

‘My dear, you’re a bad liar.’

Finally she looked up. ‘Whether or not I am attracted to him, it doesn’t matter. Nothing is going to happen. He knows the score, that anyone close to me gets hurt.’

‘And you don’t think this Operation thing is to break the curse so he can get close to you?’

Henny regarded him for a second before leaning over and blowing out the candle, giving him no time to protest. The animated eyes, nose and mouth froze into place and she put him back in the kitchen.

She went through the rest of the day cleaning the house and having only one minor accident with some washing up liquid she’d got in her eye. A flurry of swearwords and pouring cold water over her eye soon sorted it out. It did nip for a while afterwards, though.

Later on when the sky was beginning to darken, she switched on the television. There was a Colin Firth movie on soon that she could never tire of watching. A glass of milk and a plate of cheese-laden crackers lay on the coffee table before her. She leant across and grabbed a cracker but hadn’t even managed to take a bite before there was a knock at her door. Still used to her own company and being shunned by everyone in the village, it took her a few moments to consider that it was Nathan knocking.
